Mwende in braidsI never thought I would be trying to get more growth on my hair. My hair has been relaxed for over 15 years and growth has always been the enemy. Now that I am transitioning from long relaxed hair to natural hair, getting as much growth  in the shortest time frame possible, is the new goal. I have only braided four times in my life (I am currently in braids for the fourth time) and I’m still getting used to it. I have struggled with an itchy scalp, sleeping with braids on among other issues.

Here are some tips I’ve learned that will help in maintaining your braids and make sure that hair benefits from the protective styling braids offer.

1. Avoid braids that are too tight or heavy for your hair: Make sure your braids aren’t too tightly done, especially around the hairline to avoid a thinning hairline. Braids that are too heavy for your hair will add undue stress to your hair.

2. Avoid styling that puts too much tension on your hair:Buns and pony tails are great hairstyles but not daily ones. They put strain especially on your hairline.

3. Sleep with a silk scarf or on a silk pillowcase: Silk has a smooth surface which means less friction on your hair and hence less damage.

4.  Wash and condition hair: Contrary to popular belief, braided hair still requires cleaning. I have my braids washed at the salon every two weeks. You don’t have to get your braids fully wet to wash them. You can clean your scalp using a spritz bottle. Don’t forget to condition after you wash.

5. Keep your hair moisturized: Oil your scalp after every wash. Also, moisturize your roots every day with a water based moisturizer.

Braids are a great way to give your hair a rest and also to aid in growth. However, it beats the purpose if you keep your braids for months and your hair comes off worse than it was before. Braids shouldn’t be kept in for more than 6 weeks. Always keep in mind that you have to keep up your hair routine even when your hair is in braids.
