Simama OutreachLast Friday I joined a group of enthusiastic young people on a trip to Kamukunji High. I was there as one of the many career mentors that had volunteered their afternoon to share with the teens at the school. I was nervous, it being my first time, but it went swimmingly well and I left feeling challenged. This was just one of the many sessions put together by Simama Outreach Trust.
The day started off with a talk from Faith Muturi (more popularly known for her role as host of NTV’s Crossover Live), the Simama Team leader, at the Kamkunji school assembly. A motivational talk was accompanied right after by one of the Simama Team members, Bina Maseno, who vied for a political sit at the age 22. Youth for Christ was also present and they shared some of their life testimonies on sexuality.

The team also addressed issues young people face such as drugs and alcohol abuse, unemployment and peer education. Cliff Laban, NTV Business News Anchor, gave a motivational talk based on his life story and past experience. Two Kamkunji High School Alumni were also present for the kick off of ‘Turudini Mashuleni’ an initiative that seeks to have alumni plug into their former schools to be part of the generation of solutions.

Unemployment is one of the biggest issues facing the youth in Kenya. Career mentors (including myself) were present to give the teens some tips. The fields represented included Human Resource Management, Catering, IT, Performing Arts and Media, Counselling, Social Work, Teaching, Business, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Fashion Design.
The career mentorship session was followed up by an electrifying concert in conjunction with System Unit; Willy Paul, Dk Kwenye beat, Mr . Seed, LJ Maasai & Bahati who gave outstanding performances. Top Hype man MC Njugush & MC Abel kept the crowd on their feet. Youth TV were present and captured the whole day’s events. The students looked ecstatic and it was definitely a worthwhile use of a Friday afternoon.

Simama Outreach are planning to hold more of such sessions and are always looking for mentors. If you want to give a few words of wisdom to a teen, get in touch with them. “You don’t have to have all the answers, you just have to be willing to share what you know.” Personally, I can’t wait for the next one!
