OLX Kenya

“Christmas Christmas everybody sing…” This song is very much a part of my childhood. A Kenyan Christmas is a special one. We may not have Christmas trees, eggnog and apple pies on our tables but we do have our own Kenyan Christmas traditions. My favourite childhood memories of Christmas include going shopping for new clothes, devouring Chicken pilau made by my amazing cook of a mother, getting a sugar rush from all the juice, cake, ice-cream and sweets I’d shove down my throat and playing with my cousins. There was also be watching of movies that would show on TV and singing along to my mom’s Christmas carol cassettes as we helped her prepare a feast. The Boney M Christmas album was on heavy rotation back then.

Fast forward to 2014 and I’m in my mod twenties and unfortunately, Christmas has lost a bit of its magic. As I’m older now, Christmas is more of work than anything else. I do a lot of cooking and cleaning and by the time I can actually sit down and enjoy myself, I am dreaming of my bed more than anything else. I also have to contribute towards the family Christmas budget and I am always scandalized by the amount of money we spent during this time. Jesus did not die for this!

Much as I’d prefer to spend the minimum during Christmas, one of the things I cannot skimp on is gifts. I am thankful for family and gifts (as well as hugs) are a good way to demonstrate that. Most businesses inflate their prices and also, they have the same stuff. I am a bit sentimental and I like to buy things that matter to people and they will actually use. This year, I have decided to try out OLX and see if I can find some good deals that will work well as presents for my awesome fam.

After about half a day of perusing OLX (there are so many awesome things), I settled on the following items as Christmas gifts for my family members: A guitar case for my little brother who’s guitar case got damaged, a custom made painting for my parents for their bedroom, vinyl dumbbells for my brother who’s trying to build muscle and ab wheels for my sister who’s also been working out quite a bit. All of this is all well within my budget and of course there’s the added convenience of finding everything in one place. And now to look for something for myself. I can also be my own Santa Claus, you know!
