Nose piercing

Piercings are beautiful and a great fashion statement. Whether on the ears or nose or even belly button, they look pretty amazing (in my opinion anyway). There have been some negative thoughts on piercings especially the ones in perceived non traditional places i.e. anywhere that’s not the ear lobes, but the trend has been changing.

I recently got a nose piercing and I absolutely love it. Here are some tips for those looking to get a nose piercing to make the process as painless as it can be.

1.Consent

Consent is important and is something to be aware of. Piercings require consent so if you’re under 18, you need to go with an adult. There are also additional rules when it comes to certain types of piercings including nose piercings. A lot of piercers will not give nose piercings or non traditional piercings to anyone under 16. You actually have to be 21 and above to get these piercings without consent from a guardian. A professional establishment will have you sign a consent form.

2.Quality piercer and cost

It’s really important to find a good quality piercer. Good quality might be more expensive but it’s well worth it. A nose piercing can get easily infected and so it’s important to get it done by a professional using sterile equipment. I got mine done at Body Shock at Yaya Centre and it was a good experience. The process was really professional and cost me Ksh 3,000. There is an option to get the piercing done with a gun (the same one used for ear piercings) for Ksh 800 but it produces a rather big piercing. If you want a tiny piercing, you have to have it done with a needle and it’s more expensive but well worth it.

3. Choosing the right nose piercing and jewellery

There are several types of nose piercings: the nostril piercing, the septum piercing, bridge piercing, vertical tip/rhino piercing, septril piercing and nassalang piercing. The list of types of jewellery is extensive as well and includes hoops, rings, studs, screws and pins.

I got a nostril piercing and picked a tiny stud for jewellery. The options can be confusing so it’s important to go to a professional who can take you through the various options available and what will work for you. If it’s your first nose piercing, a nostril piercing is a good start as it’s the least painful option and takes less time to heal than the other options.

4. Caring for piercing

You should get a cleaning solution from the piercer and make sure to clean every morning and evening. Avoid makeup and lotions directly on the piercing. Also avoid swimming, or at least putting your face in the water as it’s super easy to have the jewellery lodge out.

You might be wondering, how long does it take for a nose piercing to heal?

Funny thing is that the nose piercing (at least in my case) is less painful than getting your ears pierced. It was painful during the piercing (about one minute) and then uncomfortable for two minutes and then nothing after that. I actually keep forgetting that the piercing is there and so it’s really easy to accidentally hit my nose ring when rubbing my nose or even have it caught in clothing when dressing. Staying aware and keeping a daily cleaning regiment will keep infections at bay.
