Victoria Kimani

I love Victoria Kimani. There, I said it. I know quite a number of Kenyans have a love-hate relationship with her music because they feel she’s not really Kenyan as she’s based in Nigeria and sings in Nigerian dialects. Well, she is signed to Chocolate City, a Nigerian label, so it is a little expected that she would cater to her primary market. Also, in my opinion it is a demonstration of Pan-Africanism so I am a fan of both her music and her style. (Another source of angst for many)…

Victoria’s latest jam is ‘All The Way’ and features the talented South African hip-hop artiste, Khuli Chana. The track is produced by Chocolate City and is the kind of 90s RnB jam that could have you on the dancefloor doing the butterfly. It’s definitely a change of pace from what Victoria has been serving up and it’s a nice direction. If some of the lyrics sound familiar when you listen to the song, that’s because they are. Victoria sampled Angelique Kidjo’s ‘Wombo Lombo’ for the verses. It’s a fantastic rendition and another example of Victoria’s versatility.

The video was shot in Johanesburg, South Africa. Unfortunately, I couldn’t confirm the name of the Director which is a shame as this video is quite something. First of all, Victoria should go blonde more often; it really suits her skin tone. Going with a 90s style with a modernized African vibe, the styling is perfection. I especially can’t get over the baggy combat pants paired with the print jacket outfit. The video features well-done choreography and visually interesting scenes that channel female artistes from the 90s like Aaliyah and Mariah Carey. Khuli Chana’s verse is a great addition to what is already a winning jam and the combination just works nicely.

I am really excited about the direction Victoria Kimani is going in. Her style and videos are an extension of her music and that to me is always a good thing. I love this jam so much I have it on replay and I can’t wait to be out one of these days and get down to it.

Fav lyrics: “Oh baby tonight, I wanna break it down tonight…”

Fav moment: When Victoria and her dancers break out a slew of fierce poses.

Jam best for: Out with your girls and you spot a potential bae and proceed to break it down.

Rating: 4.5/5
