Travel is an opportunity to see the world and learn new things as well as take a break from the pressure of everyday living. I never used to travel much because I thought that it required a lot of money and was therefore not an option. I’ve come to realize that that’s not necessarily the case. Obviously, this depends on a lot of factors but you can travel extensively and enjoy yourself on a modest budget. The secret is in the planning. Here are 5 ways to make your travel plans easier to manage and execute in the year.

1. Mark off dates

Things aren’t concrete until they are marked on your calendar. Setting a specific time(s) for your vacation makes it easier to plan everything else around it and there’s nothing as motivating as commiting to achieve a goal.

2. Pick a destination

Picking where you go will give your planning a direction especially as far as your finances are concerned. It’s a good idea to have an idea of how much a vacation will cost early so you can put the money aside or start saving early.

3. Save

Vacations can be spontaneous especially if they’re weekend getaways, but most need you to plan and put some money aside. Having a monthly savings plan is an organized way to go about it. If you’re not disciplined enough to save monthly, you can do a weekly or even a daily contribution. Putting aside say two hundred shillings every day towards your vacation might be easier than putting aside a couple of thousands at the end of the month. Just make sure you’re disciplined enough to not use the money until vacation time.

4. Look out for deals/bundling offers

A number of travel companies have some pretty affordable deals. Some of them even have bundling offers that give fantastic discounts on travel and accommodation. With the renewed interest in local tourism in Kenya, there are lots of offers especially to the Coast and Mara. There are aslo lots of international travel offeres available. Peruse hotel and airline websites and travel focused social media accounts as well to see if there are any offers available.

5. Research, research, research

Travelling to new places is becoming less hectic with the advent of technology. There are numerous apps that can help you plan your vacation with tips on the best transport to the most affordable hotel. There are also fantastic review websites that can give you an idea of where to stay and what to expect. Be sure to also read some travel blogs. I’ve found travel blogs to be a really good resource especially as far as finding new interesting places to visit is concerned.

Here’s to making those travel plans, more exploring and learning. Happy travels!
