KikeTele To Celebrate International Women’s Day with Women Game Changers in Art Event

KikeTele is a women-centric organization whose goal is to collect, tell and share African women’s stories, particularly Kenyan women, encouraging the formation of a community of women that can instigate change. They aim to encourage women to define their own narratives, creating a space where women can not only gain information, but also interact with each other and engage in the wider social environment. This is encapsulated in their motto: Community | Conversation | Change.

KikeTele has held a number of events dubbed ‘Kike Talks’ that are a two hour salon style event that push for dialogue on issues that affect women in the society. The idea is to have experts of the subject matter at hand to answer questions that may arise, but generally to have the forum as open as possible to encourage as many of the participants to share their opinions and thoughts on the topic of the day.

KikeTele in partnership with Alliance and Lightbox Africa will hold an event, ‘Women Game Changers’ to mark International Women’s Day 2016 as part of Festival CulturElles celebrations. The 2016 International Women’s Day theme is ‘Pledge For Parity’ that is a call to action for gender parity.

The event is on Monday March 7th from 6pm at the Alliance auditorium and will kick off with a screening of a short documentary on FGM in Samburu by Lightbox Africa and Samburu Girls’ Foundation followed by a discussion on the same with Saida Ali Mohamed (Consultant -Feminist analysis and women’s rights), Dr. Faith Mwangi-Powell (Country Director for the University Research Company, Kenya) and Kennedy Otina (Coordinator Men to Men FEMNET). This discussion will be moderated by Nyambura Gathumbi.

The second half of the event will feature a panel discussion on the various ways in which Kenyan women are portrayed in the arts as well as the contribution young women artistes are making to change the narrative. The panellists will include: Abigail Arunga (poet), Aleya Kassam (writer), Monitah (musician), Nduta Kariuki (visual artist) and Sarah Waiswa also known as Lafrohemien (Photographer). This will be moderated by myself {Mwende Ngao (filmmaker/writer)}.
