The Kenyan film industry has experienced encouraging growth over the last decade. One Fine Day Films in partnership with Ginger Ink Films has played a significant role with the production of succesful films like: Soul Boy, Nairobi Half Life, Something Necessary and Veve. One Fine Day Films has produced these films since 2008 as part of their master class offering to African filmmakers. Their latest offering is ‘Kati Kati’, a film co-written by Mugambi Nthiga and Mbithi Masya and directed by Mbithi Masya.

‘Kati Kati’ stars Nyokabi Gethaiga as a young woman who wakes up in the afterlife with no memory of her life or death and Elsaphan Njora as a ghost that helps her assimilate to the afterlife. The film has been received well, notably winning the FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) prize for the disovery programme at the Toronto International Film Festival 2016 (TIFF 2016). Kati Kati is Mbithi Masya’s first feature film.

The film has done the rounds in the festival circuit including Chicago International Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Stockholm Film Festival and Casacade Festival of African Films. ‘Kati Kati’ will screen on opening night of the inaugral NBO Film Festival, set to run from the 26th of January to the 5th of February. The festival concept is a collaboration between Mbithi Masya and Sheba Hirst and aims to grow appreciation of film in Nairobi, especially by Kenyan filmmakers.
