Muthoni Gitau (@IAmMuthoniGitau) is a lot of things: writer, poet, blogger, YouTuber and slowly venturing into styling and fashion design. She loves everything art, be it plays, narratives or  live bands. She is also a short person who is crazy and loves it.

1. Did you always know you wanted to be a blogger?

Not exactly. From a young age, I wanted to be in media. It started with being a news anchor but changed to a TV presenter which eventually turned into a radio presenter. I have never been any of these. I used to write a lot in high school. After I finished high school, I got a job as a writer for online content. That is where my love for blogging began. Years later, I started my own blog.

2. What is your creative process like?

This makes it sound like I have one. It changes depending on what I’m working on. I take a different approach every time. One thing that is consistent though, is that I like working under pressure when it comes to writing.

3. How much do your life experiences influence your work?

A lot. I feel like my work is a summary of my life experiences as well as observations.

4. You also vlog. What goes into putting out an episode and what has been the reception?

This is quite the process. It starts with figuring out what the topic of the day is. I write down my talking points if it is a topic that requires it. I get glamed up, set up my lights, camera and sound and hit record. What comes after is where most of the work is. The editing process is crazy because I am very critical of the videos that actually end up online.

The reception has been okay. I have received messages from a number of people saying they have learnt a lot from me and that for me is enough. I’m happy I can help someone learn a thing or two about beauty and makeup.

5. Who are your favourite bloggers and why?

Who Wear What and Wendy’s Lookbook  internationally and in terms of fashion. Locally, I like a lot of different bloggers in different ways like the likes of Magunga, Owaahh and Story Zetu.

6. What are your thoughts on blogging in Kenya, what challenges have you faced as a blogger and how do you think we can improve on the craft?

I think it has become a huge deal over the last year or two to the point where everyone wants to be one. My biggest challenge is myself. I have had problems with consistency but I am hoping to change that. The aim to always do a better job than in your last post is what can improve the craft.

7. What work/project are you most proud of?

I will confidently say everything. Mostly Youtube. But I feel my best work is yet to be created.

8. What advice would you give an aspiring blogger that you wish you had gotten when you were starting out?

Don’t wait around. Go for it now. Also, don’t let others be in charge of your cpanel. Your back end is yours and yours only.

9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, Muthoni Gitau will be a house hold name. Fingers crossed.

Bonus Question

10. If you could work with any brand especially in the beauty industry, who would it be and why?

Locally, it would be Suzie Beauty because she took that first step and I like people that are not afraid to take risks. Globally, I would love to work with Lancome because they have a great range of both skin care and makeup.
