Back in the day, before I became an ardent cider drinker, I was a Kingfisher drinker. I became fond of the drink because it was one of my mom’s favourite drinks and seemed like a good place to start. Kingfisher was only available as a strawberry fruit wine until about 3 months ago when they launced the apple variant. I looked for it but it wasn’t available at clubs or the supermarket but I finally found it at the Oil Libya convenience store.

Design

The 300 ml bottle is sleek and looks like most light beer bottles – complete with the green colour. They redesigned the bottle for the strawberry flavour as well. It used to be short and wide, something that made it quite distinct. I suppose they wanted to modernize the bottle with the redesign but I feel it lost its uniqueness.

Price

Kingfisher Apple goes for Ksh 160 retail price and is available in a returnable galss bottle. It’s a little pricy as similar drinks are at the 140 mark but it’s probably the bottle. Alcohol percentage is at 8% so it’s not a drink you want to down too fast.

Taste

The first sip was great but the aftertaste wss quite awful. I honestly couldn’t get past 4 sips. It tastes like undercooked traditional beer. I was quite nauseated after drinking it. I at first assumed it was my tastebuds that didn’t like it, but after having six other people try it out, I concluded that it just doesn’t taste good.

Verdict

I am not drinking this again and will be surprised to meet someone who actually likes this drink. I still like the strawberry flavour, which is the original, and hope to see a can version of the same.
