Safaricom has launched FLEX, a product that gives customers freedom to choose how they allocate airtime for calls, SMS or data services, in line with customer feedback.

Why FLEX?

Currently, Safaricom customers purchase bundles or airtime in fixed amounts, which are mostly pre-determined. FLEX  will give customers well, flexibility in that the depletion of resources is based on total usage of voice, sms and data rather than fixed limits e.g.

Who is the target market?

FLEX is available for all Safaricom customers but the main target market is people who are heavy phone users ideally business owners.

What is FLEX?

There are 3 bundle options: Ksh 99 daily bundle, Ksh 599 weekly bundle and Ksh 2,499 monthly bundle. The daily Ksh 99 affords you 115 FLEX units, the weekly Ksh 599 bundle affords you 700 FLEX units and the monthly Ksh 2,499 affords you 3,100 FLEX units.

How does it work?

Dial *100# or *200# to sign up. The service is available to both prepay and postpay customers.

What are the benefits?

Upon signing up for the new service, customers will be able to convert their regular Safaricom airtime into ‘FLEX’ units, which will they will be able to use to gain 35 per cent savings on calls, SMS or data. The new offering will allow ‘FLEX’ customers to earn loyalty points (3 FLEX bundles) every time they send above Shs 100 on M-PESA.

FAQs

I attended the launch of the product and these were some of the popular questions asked.

1. Do FLEX units roll over?

Yes, FLEX units roll over but only if they are renewed before expiry. Also, if you move from one bundle to another, the rolled over units will be incorporated into the new bundle.

2. What happens if you’re subscribed to another service?

If you sign up to FLEX, you will be unsubscribing from that other service. This is especially important to note for people on postpaid. You however, cannot sign up for FLEX if you have another bundle still running ie perhaps you are on the 1GB data bundle. FLEX will advice that you deplete ongoing bundles/resources first before you can subscribe.

3. Can you sambaza FLEX units?

No.

4. Does FLEX work across other networks?

Yes, you can call and Text across networks with FLEX.
