Too Early for Birds is a collaboration between writer Morris Kiruga, more popularly known as Owaahh and writers/performers, Ngartia and Abu Sense. The first edition was held on May 17th 2017, at The Kenya National Theatre and showcased stories of Otenyo Nyamaterere, Mũthoni Nyanjirũ, the Nyayo House Torture Chambers and Paul Ngei. The show was sold out and garnered positive reviews, leading to plans for a second edition.

In the second volume, the team decided to explore the stories of precolonial and post-independence Kenya’s political dissent. Reverend Timothy Njoya, Wangari Maathai and The Bukusu Community at the Chetambe and Lumboka war were some of the stories featured. The show also told the incredible story of how Juja got its name – a story which traverses three continents and includes witchcraft, exploration, decadent settlers and a robbery in Nairobi by Teddy Roosevelt – the former US president.

This time, the stories were told in two days (on July 29th and 30th) and both shows were sold out. The team also put on another sold out performance that was a meld of the two productions staged earlier in the year, as part of the annual literary festival by Storymoja at the Louis Leakey Auditorium at the National Museums of Kenya.

The show makes a return for a third edition on January 13th and 14th 2018 at the Kenya National Theatre, this time with stories exploring the Kenyan crime scene. Officers such as Patrick Shaw and Daniel Seronei have gained fame through their crime busting techniques. Their popularity is only rivalled by the gangsters they were hunting down. Some who have been talked about so much it is almost impossible to separate their actual exploits from myths. These are the likes of Wanugu, Wacucu, Matheri, Wakinyonga and Shimoli “the Jackal”.
