I’ve heard great things about Mizani hair products over the last couple of years, but getting my hands on the products locally has been a challenge. You can imagine my excitement when I got an invitation to the Kenyan launch of Mizani. Mizani is an American brand under the L’Oreal banner. It launched in 1991 via a joint venture between Softsheen Carson and Redken and was acquired by the Professional Products Division of L’Oreal in 1998. L’Oreal opened Mizani institutes throughout Africa in 2014, and the L’Oreal Sub-Saharan Africa Research and Innovation Center in South Africa where Mizani products are customized for African women in 2016.

This year Mizani is launching Bond pHorce, a breakthrough technology that restores hair pH back to the ideal zone. African women are well-known for being adventurous with our hair, with women changing their hair 6 to 13 times a year. I’m below the average but I do enjoy styling my natural hair quite a bit and do some protective styling as well. All this constant manipulation of hair especially when chemicals and heat are involved will damage your hair.

Relaxing your hair takes it from a normal pH of 4.5 to about 12. Bond pHorce technology brings your hair back to the ideal pH zone of 4.5 to 5.5 after a relaxer. This means your hair is neutralized and therefore less prone to breakage, stronger and can grow longer.

Mizani has a comprehensive range of products for different hair needs, which I appreciate because it means they took into account the various ways African women choose to keep their hair. Other than the relaxer pHorce, there is also texturizer pHorce, transition pHorce, braids & weave pHorce and deep treatment pHorce. So whether you’re styling your own hair or wearing a weave or braids, there is a Mizani product that is specifically made to protect and strengthen your hair.

What is most impressive from getting to interact with the Mizani L’Oreal team is listening to they’re rollout plan. Mizani is a professional product, so their main clientele is hair professionals. That being said, they have what they call a ‘Salon Expert Programme’. Salon Expert is an exclusive group of salons with a quality label guaranteeing consumers the highest standards of service. Mizani under L’Oreal provide exclusive trainings in hairdressing and digital skills, drive consumers to salons under the programme and host in salon promotions to help boost business. For a salon to stock and use Mizani products, they have received training and so are able to deliver world-class service to their clients.

Can you buy the products and use them at home? Yes, you can. However, this is not encouraged especially for relaxer products that require training to use. Mizani guarantees great results, but only if the protocols are followed. You can however, use some of the products for homecare like leave-in treatments and the braid and weave care products.

I wear my hair natural, so it was great to see that there is also a range of natural hair products under the True Texture banner. I got my hands on the leavein conditioner for home use and I must say that it’s working well – my hair is easier to manage and shedding has drastically reduced. With these encouraging results, I will get the full range of products but I will give a salon visit to one of the accredited salons a try first and see what the products in professional hands can do.
