The Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music collaboration made it to Kenya for the first time this past week at the Alchemist. Ballantine’s Scotch whisky is committed to supporting and celebrating artists who do it ‘their way’. Whether they’re just starting out or established global stars, True Music work to support and celebrate artists who make music they truly believe in, without compromise.

The Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music platform builds on a successful four-year partnership, championing artists with a pioneering spirit and challenge them to continue pushing boundaries. Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music has collaborated with more than 160 artists across more than 20 events seen by more than 70 million people worldwide.

Having kicked off in Cape Town last year and stopped off in Douala Cameroon in March, Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music Africa tour came to Nairobi with Johannesburg still to come, showcasing the most exciting underground artists. From Nairobi nu-wave to eclectic afro-fusion, the idea is to tell the stories of the varied music scenes sweeping the continent via compelling documentaries and live-streamed parties to bring Africa’s True Music scene to a global stage.

Bringing the eclectic sounds of afro-house, afro-rap and of course Nairobi nu-wave, the show had Muthoni Drummer Queen, EA Wave, Suraj, Taio and Coco EM on the lineup. All the artists were hand-picked by Ballantine’s and Boiler Room based on the credibility and committment of the artists. Tickets were free but had to be booked online through the True Music site.

The event was a night of epic performances and delicious Ballantine’s cocktails. True Music are planning on doing more in Kenya so the future should be quite interesting. Following this third stop in Nairobi, True Music Africa will culminate in June when Johannesburg plays host to the True Music Forum, a space for the international music community to learn, exchange and build new ideas through panel discussions and workshops.
