The Kotex She Can Awards are in their second year and will honour women who are making a difference and driving change.

The awards which are the highlights of the #PeriodOrNotSheCan campaign, seek to directly engage young women, inspiring them to break barriers that stand in the way of their success and progress. As part of the campaign, Kotex has distributed over 50,000 sanitary pads to women and girls living in informal settlements.

In line with the campaign theme of ‘Championing Her Progress’, the #PeriodOrNotSheCan campaign kicked off in May, which is Menstrual Wellness Month, when the world marks milestones made towards women’s menstrual wellness and reproductive health.

Kenyan Doctor, Nyachira Muthiga, is set to be honored for her exemplary work in the fight against Covid -19 in the country. She is among this year’s Kotex ‘She Can’ women Honorees, including Environmentalist Liz Mazingira, Publicist Anyiko Owoko and Visually Impaired Persons Ambassador Crystal Asige, who will be celebrated in the 2020 Kotex She Can Awards.

Dr. Nyachira, one of the first Kenyan doctors to have undertaken a World Health Organization (WHO) training on Critical Care on Coronavirus, has been sharing valuable Covid-19 management tips on her YouTube Channel as well as equipping medics across Quarantine Health Facilities and Hospitals. 

Commenting about the award, Dr Nyachira who is currently a Medical Officer at Mbagathi District Hospital in Nairobi and a Medical Advisor to the University of Nairobi’s Science and Technology Park said, “I am humbled to be nominated and appreciate the recognition for all front-liners who have demonstrated courage in rising up to serve their communities despite Covid-19.”

“Every year, we celebrate women who are authentic, and pushing limits in achieving success, and despite the lock-down, 2020 is no different. We urge the public to join us in spotlighting phenomenal women, who are making a difference across all sectors of society and especially during this period of Covid -19,” said Christopher Waithaka Senior Brand Manager, Feminine Care Category – West, East & Central Africa at Kimberly Clark.

The 2020 She Can Award Nominations kicked off with Kotex’s first ever live concert hosted on 14th May 2020 at 7pm across Kotex platforms on social media, targeting over 10,000 women across Kenya. Hosted by renowned performing artist Particia Kihoro, the event featured riveting performances from upcoming artists including Nikita Kering, Xenia Manasseh, Emma Cheruto and Wendy Kay.

To be eligible for the She Can Award, nominations must be sent between 15th to 27th May 2020 via the Kotex Instagram and Facebook pages. Voting for the She Can 2020 Awards will take place between 28th May and 11th June 2020 after which the final six women who exemplify the campaign values of being authentic, committed to service, and connected to society will be announced.
