Supporting Education in Kenya Through Ndoto Zetu

Ndoto Zetu, launched 2019, is an initiative by the Safaricom Foundation to partner with Kenyans keen to make a difference in their communities through social investments. Since its inception, Ndoto Zetu has executed over 600 projects worth Ksh 90 million, ranging from Ksh 40,000 such as sanitary towels distribution, to initiatives worth Ksh 1.5 million like donation of maternity equipment to hospitals positively impacting close to 2 million Kenyans.

The initiative focuses on health, education and economic empowerment projects and Safaricom has set aside Ksh 100 million for successfully submitted projects.

Education is key in the development of a community and of a nation. Education gives children, especially coming from backgrounds of poverty, the chance to not only escape poverty, but to also uplift their families.

Some of the projects Ndoto Zetu has supported in Education include:

Kahawa Wendani Primary School

The students at Kahawa Wendani Primary School received a donation of desks that have made their learning experience more comfortable. The students were struggling with the desks they had before as they were dilapidated leading to falls and injuries. The headteacher, Patrick Mbogo, shared that the desks made a difference in learning and were adequate for a classroom of 50 students at 2 students per desk.

Githurai Primary School

Elizabeth Waithera applied for the Ndoto Zetu initiative on behalf of the school she teaches at to get the students computers to enhance their access to digital tools and knowledge. The school received 10 computers for their computer lab. The world is undeniably digital and all students must possess computer literacy skills at the bare minimum to effectively compete. The exposure to the digital world also enhances research as students can learn and discover on their own time from various online resources.

St. Georges Primary School

St. Georges Primary School is situated in the heart of Kiambu County in Ruiru town. The school has a program that caters to special needs children, ensuring they are able to have a proper education. The program continues to see a higher intake of students, presenting a need for more therapy equipment.

Penninah Njoki, a teacher at the school, reached out to the Safaricom Foundation, through the Ndoto Zetu initiative and through her request, the special needs program received therapy kits. Now the students have access to tools that enhance their learning process and improves their well-being.

Ngala Memorial Secondary School

Ngala Memorial Secondary School was initially a primary school that made the transition into a high school. With this change came the challenge of over-stretching the school’s attendance capacity – the result being students sharing desks. Their wish was to have more desks and chairs. Ndoto Zetu, upon their request, provided them with 70 desks and seats. With an improved learning experience, students of Ngala Memorial can focus on getting the most out of their education.

If you wish to partner with Ndoto Zetu for an education project, send your submission through Safaricom Foundation’s Ndoto Zetu website or visit any Safaricom Retail Shop and fill in an application form for a chance to have your community dream realized. Successful participants will be contacted by the Safaricom Foundation through 0722 000 000.
