As the year draws to a close, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season often takes centre stage. While gift-giving and celebrations bring joy, it’s easy to lose sight of the simple blessings that enrich our lives. This January, embark on a journey of gratitude with me with the New Year Gratitude Challenge!

How it Works

I saw this challenge online and I thought it would be such a great way to kick off the new year. For 31 days, starting January 1st, take a few moments each day to reflect on something you’re grateful for. It can be anything – big or small, personal or professional. This challenge is an invitation to cultivate an attitude of gratitude, especially as we step into the new year.

How To Get Started

It’s not a difficult challenge and will easily grow on you as you keep at it.

Start by dedicating a few minutes daily to practising gratitude. Aim for 5 to 10 minutes each day. This could be during your morning routine, before bed, or at any convenient time. Reflect on different aspects of your life and be grateful for all the positive experiences, supportive relationships, good health, personal growth, and even the small joys that brighten your day. Make sure to reflect on specific moments, qualities you appreciate, or shared experiences that deepen your gratitude. Take it a step further by expressing your gratitude to loved ones and anyone with a positive influence on your life.

Record the things you are grateful for on a daily basis through:

  • Keeping a journal: Write your reflections in a dedicated notebook or gratitude journal.
  • Creating a gratitude jar: Write your daily gratitudes on slips of paper and drop them into a jar. At the end of the month, revisit these messages to be reminded of your blessings.
  • Using a gratitude app: Several apps can guide you through the challenge and provide prompts for self-reflection.

The Benefits of Gratitude

Research shows that regularly practising gratitude can lead to numerous benefits, including:

  • Increased happiness and well-being. By focusing on what you appreciate, you train your mind to notice the positive aspects of life, even amidst challenges, shifting your perspective.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety. Gratitude helps you appreciate what you already have, fostering a sense of fulfilment and contentment.
  • Stronger relationships. Sometimes we take the people in our lives for granted and gratitude helps us remember how blessed we really are.
  • Improved sleep quality. Staying grateful keeps us in a positive mindset and reduces stress levels.
  • Enhanced self-esteem. There’s nothing quite like thinking of all the good in our lives to make us feel like we’re on top of the world.

There’s no right or wrong way to participate in the challenge. The key is to be intentional and consistent in your daily reflections, and to allow yourself to truly sit in gratitude.
