I started going for community yoga late last year, and my practice deepened this year. It’s been a truly life-changing experience and compliments my meditation practice.

Yoga, often perceived as complex and exclusive, is actually accessible to everyone, regardless of age, flexibility, or fitness level. It’s a practice that unites the mind, body, and spirit, offering a myriad of benefits from increased flexibility and strength to improved focus and stress reduction.

Getting Started

Begin your journey by investing in the essentials. You’ll need a yoga mat for comfort and grip and comfortable clothing that allows movement.

There are numerous yoga styles, from gentle Hatha to dynamic Vinyasa. I would say explore different types to find what resonates with you. There are affordable classes everywhere, with some even free. YouTube is also a great resource. Begin with a few basic poses and gradually increase your practice duration.

Focus on breath as deep, steady breathing is a cornerstone of yoga. Pay attention to your breath as you move through poses. This will get easier as you practise and is actually my favourite thing about yoga. I find I can breathe so much better than before.

As you build on your practice, listen to your body and be patient. Avoid pushing yourself too hard and work with and not against yourself.

Basic Yoga Poses for Beginners

These are some of the poses I’ve found are easiest for beginners.

Mountain Pose: This foundational pose helps align the body.

Downward-Facing Dog: Stretches the whole body and calms the mind.

Warrior II: Strengthens legs, arms, and core.

Triangle Pose: Improves balance, flexibility, and stability.

Child’s Pose: A resting pose to relax and stretch the spine.

To reap the rewards of yoga, practice consistency. Even a short daily practice can make a significant difference. Enjoy the journey of discovering the benefits of yoga for yourself.
