I got my hands on the OPPO A92 a few weeks ago and have been using it to get a feel of what the user experience is like. I had unboxed the phone already and you can read about my first impression here.

OPPO has been consistently putting out devices that have been loved by Kenyan consumers. The devices tend to be affordable but packed with features that go beyond the basics.

The OPPO A92 came with nifty earbuds that have made the phone an even more enjoyable experience. You can read my OPPO Wireless review here.

Here are my thoughts on the OPPO A92.

Operating System, Memory and Processor

The OPPO A92 runs on Android 10 and ColorOS 7.2 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor and Adreno 610 GPU. The memory is 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage which you can expand via external MicroSD card.

These specs mean that multitasking for heavy users is seamless. I’ve been able to have multiple tabs open and work entirely on my phone all day with no issues. I’m not much of a gamer, but for those who are, there’s a dedicated Game Space and Game Assistant feature where games are allowed memory exceptions, boosted power demands and network speeds. The feature even provides per game tailored visual experiences and slows down any apps that are sucking up data in the background.

Build and Design

The OPPO A92 comes in three colours: Twilight Black, Stream White and Aurora Purple. I prefer my phones black but this one I got in Aurora Purple and I must say my mind has changed as it’s a lovely colour.

It features a 6.5″ LCD Neo Display with a resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels at 405 ppi density, which offers a beautiful viewing experience. Readability in direct sunlight is good and I didn’t have any issues there. The phone features slim top and side bezels, with a large bezel at the bottom.

The phone’s button placement is different from the standard button placement. The volume rockers are to the left and the power button on the right.

The power button also functions as the fingerprint reader and works by skimming your finger over the sensor for a second to unlock the phone.

There’s also face unlock if you prefer that.At the bottom is the USB Type-C charging port, headphone jack, primary microphone and a mono speaker grille.

The earpiece at the top puts out great stereo sound for all your multimedia needs including watching videos, listening to podcasts or gaming.

Camera

The phone comes with five cameras that include: a quad rear setup that consists of a 48MP main camera (wide), 8MP ultra-wide lens, 2MP depth sensor for portrait shots and 2MP monochrome. There’s also a 16MP selfie camera.

The OPPO A92 camera does really well in good lighting, especially daylight, and the pictures are fantastic. The main sensor uses a pixel binding process to group adjacent pixels together. This means the camera takes in more light for brighter and more detailed shots.

The phone has a dual-camera shooter at 13MP and 2MP and a 16MP front camera both with a f/2.0 aperture and dual LED flash for low light photography. The OPPO A92 also supports up to 10X zoom. The selfies are pretty good and in general, the pictures are good for the price point.

For videos, you get to shoot regular video at 4K, 30fps, 1080p at 30fps; slow-motion video at 1080p or 720p.

The phone includes Soloop, an inbuilt dedicated video editor app lets you add songs, trim and add text, and is perfect for editing short videos on the go for social media.

The camera also has features like autofocus, geo-tagging, face detection, HDR, phase detection and panorama.BatteryThe phone comes with a 5000mAh non-removable battery. The battery life on this phone is amazing. The battery can go a whole day with heavy use without needing to be charged. OPPO’s 30W VOOC fast charger, means that you can fully charge your phone in about an hour and a half.

Price and Availability

The phone is available at Ksh. 29,999 on Jumia as well as OPPO outlets countrywide.

Warranty and Support

The phone comes with a 1 year warranty. Support and service is available via OPPO service centres.

Verdict

The OPPO A92 delivers a great device that has great features at an affordable price point. It delivers on its marketing as a selfie phone and is a great buy if you’re looking to enjoy functionality and great pictures without having to splurge.
