The EastAfrican

The world has been changing rapidly through the last decade as internet connectivity increases access to information and social interaction across the globe. Corporates that are forward-thinking have incorporated elements of technology into their businesses. The EastAfrican newspaper has demonstrated that it is one of those in the forward-thinking category by launching The EastAfrican e-paper app.

The EastAfrican is celebrating 20 years this year in what has been a successful presence in the East African region. The e-paper app gives readers of the paper a more convenient option to keep up with the best stories from the East African region every week.

The app is an initiative of Nation Media Group, meant to offer readers convenience, friendly packages and notifications every week when the paper is available. The notifications come in every Monday 6.00am when a fresh paper is loaded.

Users get the app for free for the initial two weeks, after which users are required to purchase a subscription package as follows:

PACKAGE AMOUNT)
Monthly 4USD
Three Months 15USD
Six Months 28USD
One Year 50USD

The app is available on Android and IOS but not yet on Windows platforms and can be downloaded from the playstore here. Payment is via credit cards, debit cards, M-pesa paybill and cash. For the cash option, one has to walk into the Nation Media offices, pay in cash and have the app activated for them.

The app is pretty straightforward to use. After downloading it from the playstore, you have to register by inputing your email address and a password. This is what you will use to login every time you wish to use the app. The app interface is easy to use and consists of a drop down menu that consists of FAQs, subscription details, about and options to change password and logout.

The home page consists of four options that give you the latest edition of The EastAfrican and the three last editions from the archives that you can download to read. The files are in .pdf format and are around 45MB in size.

This is definitely a step in the right direction for this prestigious newspaper, and as an avid reader, I applaud the push to keep up with the savvy readers that want to be able to access their news on their phones on the go.
