Touted the world’s largest mobile taxi application, Easy Taxi has been in the Kenyan market since 1st April 2014. The application connects taxi drivers and passengers and is available for Android, iOS, Blackberry, and Windows Phone devices, as well as for B2B clients through Easy Taxi Pro and Easy Taxi Corporate solutions.

Easy Taxi has been building their customer base through giving out discount vouchers at events. I happened to be at one of these events and scored myself several vouchers. I had never used easy taxi before but I knew of its existence. I was broke after an event and decided to try out the app. I wasn’t sure which version to download so I downloaded the top search. That was the easy part. I turned GPS on and waited for it to configure my location. This took ten minutes and I gave up. I enlisted some help and we went the enter address route which was successful. Everything went smoothly from here with the assigning of a driver and arrival of the driver taking less than ten minutes.

On their website, Easy Taxi covers some of the pros of the service. I’ll comment on them from my experience. I have so far used the service a total of 4 times.

Convenience:It’s actually quite convenient. The app searches and finds the taxi that’s closest to your location and gives you an arrival time of the taxi. Goodbye to calling all the cabbies to find out where they are and waiting for them forever to arrive.

Safe: A good cabbie’s best attributes are reliability and safety.  It’s nice to have a taxi drivers’ name, phone number, and car details before he picks you up. So much easier to forward those details to my sister or a friend so that they can know who I was with right down to number plate and full names.

Reliable:  Some cabbies are expert liars. He’ll be five minutes away for half an hour. With Easy Taxi, you can track your taxi’s arrival in real-time via the built-in GPS. I especially love this!

Standard Prices: The claim is that they have built-in-tariff for the most popular routes in Nairobi so you know exactly how much to pay. This didn’t work too well for me. I’d try to calculate the price beforehand but it simply wasn’t working. The drivers charged me what they wanted to charge. At first I thought it’s because they came from different places. However, I once picked two taxis from Prestige to the house and I was charged varying amounts. So this definitely needs some work. Perhaps if there was a way the app calculated how much you are to pay when you arrive at your destination. Somewhat like the American taxi meter system. Just a thought.

All in all, I like the app and the service. It’s convenient and I’ll probably use it again.
