Playlist #4: My Favourite Kenyan Jams in September
2018 has been an amazing year for Kenyan music and Kenyan art in general. The music in September has been fantastic and I have been enjoying what Kenyan artistes are putting out. Yes, I will absolutely write reviews of the music videos and albums dropping in the next few weeks. For now, here’s a playlist of my favourite Kenyan jams in September 2018.
1. Muthoni Drummer Queen – Elevate
Muthoni’s album, ”She” is a testament to her growth as an artiste. She has never been afraid to colour outside the lines and challenge our perceptions of what Kenyan music can sound like and I love the direction she went with this. It’s bold and beautiful and I am here for it. In September, she put out the video for ‘Elevate’ and it is an anthem to resilience and going against the grain to succeed.
2. Naiboi – 2 in 1
Naiboi has been putting out hits for a long time but I think he has outdone himself in 2018. I enjoyed his last album, ‘Too Much’ that featured hits like ‘Gudi Gudi’ and ‘Problem’. I also liked his collaborations with Rosa and Khaligraph Jones. His latest hit has become one of my favourite Kenyan jams and I love the video which is a collection of fan videos from Kenyan celebrities. It’s a fan watch and ‘2 in 1’ is a beautiful song.
3. Mankind – Take and Go
Mankind are so dope and I am officially annoyed that they don’t get the recognition for they deserve for their consistency and great music. Their latest is ‘Take and Go’ and is a funky electronic dance number with a visually interesting video that does the song justice.
4. Atemi ft Nameless – Romantic
First of all, I am surprised that these two have neveer collaborated before because going by this, it should have happened sooner. Both Atemi and Nameless are veterans of the Kenyan music scene and are great with the love songs so this is a perfect match. It’s a fun, sweet song and the video matches its mood and lightness.
5. Blinky Bill – Showdown
Blinky Bill has been doing his thing since the disbandment of Just A Band and been winning! I knew he was talented but it’s been great to see him experimenting and pushing boundaries with his projects. His last project, ”We Cut Keys While You Wait” showed off his continued mastery and I am excited for his album, ”Everyone’s Just Winging It and Other Fly Tales”. The first single ”Showdown” dropped and it’s a certified party anthem with a best house party that you wished you were invited to video to boot.
