The Africa Nouveau 2019 edition is set for March 8th – 10th at Ngong Racecourse Waterfront. What’s in store when you enter the Africa Nouveau universe is a multi-sensory, multi-level immersive journey made up of the following experiences:

Music

This edition will see 22 live performers from 7 countries on 2 stages including an ‘after-hours’ stage.

Performers just as much as they will be participants in the festival, the musicians will be taking the theme into account in their appearances and showcases, bringing their unique Afrobubblegum flavours to the air all weekend.

Fashion

Fashion and style continues to be a core part of the Nouveau universe and this year is no different as they continue creating new art from collaboration within fashion eco-system – stylists, designers, photographers, buyers and fans. Look forward to far-out fashion installations, a chance to try and buy all the wearable art and two specially-built sets for professional photography. Select images from the shoots will be included in the 2019 Africa Nouveau handbook. Download the 2018 Africa Nouveau Lookbook here.

Virtual Reality/Gaming

Ready for some out-of-body experiences? Get up close and personal with the Nommos twins and other outer world beings in two virtual reality games designed especially for the festival. A collaboration between game developers, virtual reality creators and musicians from Kenya and Germany have collaborated to produce and showcase two story-based games (2x 8 min) in virtual reality. The games have been created by Vladimir Storm and Daniel Sproll from Germany, and Naddya Adhiambo, Salim Busuru, David Waweru Kamunyu and Evans Busuru from Kenya, with music by Suraj Mandavia with support from The Goethe Institut and Black Rhino VR.

Installations

Take the time to explore and interact with art installations too (remember last year’s pyramid and maze?). Kenyan mixed media artists Meshack Oiro and Peter Walala and artists from the UK based Kallida festival Reuben Griffiths, Daniel McGeady, Matt Woodham and Fiona Albrow have collaborated to conceptualize these core art installations and will work with design students from The University of Nairobi, School of Architecture to transform the venue into a utopian world.

This collaboration is supported by the British Council’s East Africa arts programme through their Future Festivals Programme.

Food

A boutique street style of branded bars with conceptualized seating areas will feature all your favorite drinks, cocktails and mocktails available provided by Kenyan Originals, Pernod Ricard and Coca Cola.

Film

The film stage is where, encased in a translucent geodesic dome, you’ll be transported into African futurists’ stories as curated by Design Studio 5.

Through selected 5 science fiction films and virtual reality films by African filmmakers, explore the ideas of identity and outer worldly beings/ideas beginning with the festival’s own experimental short film ‘Outer World’ which centers around two humans who receive a visit from an ancient outer world being, that has returned to communicate with them in an effort to help them remember their cultural history, wealth and knowledge. Outer World is written by Wanuri Kahiu, directed by Laurent Gaillardon and stars two exceptional Kenyan actors Joyce Maina and Nick Ndenda.

Camping

To fully experience the festival, festival goers have the option of camping on-site for the 3 nights. As with the other areas of the festival the campsite will be designed to grant its residents the freedom to experience and create their own unique and creative environments.

The 24-hour experience will also leave you free to view and interact with the installations at different times of the day, viewing them in different lights and states.
