Sustainability and green initiatives have become a big part of both public and private infrastructure and construction. Focusing on sustainability is not just good for the planet but can also mean long-term savings, plus it can offer a way to promote a business or organization to people who care about how we treat the environment. Green buildings in the US have grown and a large market based on sustainable building has emerged. In 2006, there were just 296 LEED-certified buildings in the US. By 2017, there were over 65,000.

The green building marketing in the US is worth $81 billion. Of the green building design market in the US, more than a fifth of business comes from commercial offices. Other top sectors for sustainable building include education and health care. Key certifications for green buildings include Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard. LEED is one of the most popular programs and is used worldwide, focusing on the areas of sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality.

One example of how green building in the US has grown comes from German contractor Hochtief. In 2008, they completed 108 LEED-certified projects in the US. In 2018, they completed 632 LEED-certified projects. The green building market is likely to continue to grow as demand for sustainability rises. Green building certifications help to encourage more sustainable projects not just in the US but around the world too.
